Sinead O'Connor started her career when she was still a teenager,
with the songs called "take my hand" (1983) and "Heroine" (1986). On
1987 she released her first album, "The Lion and The Cobra", which
is, in my humble opinion, one of the best albums EVER released. From then till
today, Sinead O'Connor is one of the top performers in the world. As
a social Activist, she contributed in a way to the change of thinking
in Ireland. Some current pop stars, like Bjork, PJ Harvey, The
Cranberries and Tori Amos continue her unique style, and, of course,
she herself didn't say her last word yet.
So where should you start? Possibly like me, with the spiritual
waves of "The Lion and The Cobra", with headphones attached to your
ears. There are so many songs there that will catch your heart. Start
with "Just Like u said it would b" (track 4), and then, climb to the
furious mountains of "Jerusalem", and go to visit her best song ever,
"Troy"... but really, finally you will be familiar closely to each
and every song in this great album, and Sinead will conquer your
heart.
Now, you must try to get her amazing video "The Value of
Ignorance". There, she performs most of the songs from "The Lion
& and Cobra", and she looks great. She is young, sexy (the way
she plays with the microphone...), her shining bald head is so
sensual and beautiful...
And now, you will probably fall in love with her. So you can buy
her second album, with the long name I never remember. (just joking,
it is called - "I do not want what I haven't got"). "Nothing Compares
2U" is there, and as a true Sinead's fan, u would probably learn its
words. You will sing in your car with Sinead her great song "The
Emperor's New Clothes", and I can only quote one of her most famous
sentences from this song:
"Whatever it may bring
I will live by my own policies
I will sleep with a clear conscience
I will sleep in peace..."
(A sentence that says a lot about her...)
Well, you can relax now and listen to these two albums and enjoy
Sinead in her best. When you want to go further, you can buy her
third album "Am I not You Girl". hmmm. quite a different album. Not a
rock album at all... Where is Sinead the Great? Well, this album
contains covers of oldies. The songs that Sinead grew up on them. As
a true Sinead's fan, u must have this album in your cabinet, but, I
must admit, I hope she will never do that mistake again.
Neither the mistake in releasing her fourth album. Know that:
several weeks after releasing "Am I not Your Girl" Sinead destroyed
her US-career when she did something strange to the Pope's picture,
and live! She quickly escaped from the US and returned to Ireland.
She had some bad times. She tried to commit suicide. She was (and
still, probably) hooked to light drugs. She wanted everything to put
in her next album, so at the end of 1994 she released "Universal
Mother". There, she tells us some things about her cruel mom and dad,
she cries about grief and tells us some things about children.
All of the songs there are very good and interesting, but the
album is boring. Really boring. Except maybe of the (rap?) song -
"Famine", which is quite addictive and interesting, and I'm personaly
familiar with someone who memorizes every word of it. Still, soon...
this album will sit deep inside your cabinet as well.
So, you ask me, what is there about Sinead, she released only
four albums and two of them are quite medium. So why do you find
Sinead so great, why do you love her so much?
On that, I really can't answer. Who knows? Maybe I love her only
because of her first two albums. Maybe because she is one of the very
few performers who really doesn't afraid to say what on their minds.
Maybe because she is so "human", so sweet, who knows... maybe it is
all due to her concert in Jerusalem which I liked so much.
When you will become a true Sinead fan, u should know there is
much more Sineadian things out there BESIDES her four albums. She
performed so many new songs on live concerts, singles and guest
appearances that you wouldn't believe it, there is a huge set of
great video material, some amazing interviews (take, for example, the
interview in Q from September 1994), and books that were written
about her. Sinead is a very very interesting human being, and there
is no surprise that she is considered by many as "The Queen of
Ireland".
